- The geographical area of Jasper and Newton counties. Newton County was formed out of Jasper County in 1846. Prior to that, they were one county. The two counties were named after two heroes of the American Revolution, Sgt. William Jasper and Sgt. John Newton. Together, Sgts. Jasper and Newton were able to “set prisoners free”. Separately, Jasper died a lone warrior and Newton died a sick prisoner. A Covenant Ceremony was held on January 14, 2005 between Intercessors from Jasper and Newton counties to witness and establish a covenant relationship joining Jasper County and Newton County, Texas.
